Crime on Isla Mujeres

We read a lot about this crime-ridden Island, but where exactly do we read about this? Well apart from one or two rather idiotic comments on Trip Adviser, mainly in The Cancun Post and the Cancun Sun, strange isn't it that so much of this negative press should come from Cancun? Here is an example: "Travellers looking to visit the tropical paradise of Isla Mujeres this summer have been advised to be extra vigilant of their surroundings after armed attackers robbed beachgoers last weekend". Of course, the fact that the robbery didn't even occur on the island of Isla Mujeres, fails to get mentioned, it happened on the mainland that has more to do with Cancun than Isla Mujeres, indeed the attackers arrived on Jet Skis from Cancun. A lot of people don't even know there is a very large area on the mainland, which also comes under Isla Mujeres, so of course, when they read misleading reports such as this they assume all this occurs on the island of Isla Mujeres. This incident led the U.S. State Department to update its travel advisory, which is really unfair to Isla Mujeres. So much of the crime that is written about Mexico occurs in the northern states of Mexico and is all related to the drug trade. What the different cartels need to do, is come to an agreement over territory just as the old mafia families did in New York. Isla Mujeres is tremendously safe, we have had luxury Isla Mujeres properties on the island for the past twenty years and never had a burglary. or indeed ever experienced a violent incident or a problem. You can walk around the island at three or four in the morning without any concern, there are not many places in the world where you can do that. Our Isla Mujeres luxury homes are gated and have security cameras, although that is really for the benefit of our rental clients who have become accustomed to crime in the States, and find it hard to imagine that somewhere can be as peaceful as Isla Mujeres.
