Is driving on Isla Mujeres risky?

Without doubt it driving on Isla Mujeres can be hazardous . Not hazardous perhaps when compared with driving in India and China, or Russia for that matter, but accidents are very commonplace, and many relate to golf carts.

Our Isla Mujeres rental properties always have one or two golf carts on the driveway, The renters prefer the freedom it affords them, and perhaps could be seen as essential, where our rental properties on Isla Mujeres  are located, which is at South Point, the peaceful end of the island, but the opposite end of the island from the center.

Often renters want to go to the center to dine, and it is not easy relying on taxis in the evening, very few taxis are to be found at South Point in the evening. We are finding however that increasingly our Isla Mujeres rental clients are not hiring golf carts and instead relying on the facilities we have here at South Point. There are beach clubs, bars and some excellent restaurants,  all within walking distance. Of the restaurants at the southern end of the island, the best of which is Ulan Eatery; the food and service is excellent, and it's a great open-air location.

Using these local facilities in South Point makes a lot of sense, with the golf cart rental companies now charging up to $80 USD per 24-hour rental, it represents a significant saving on a one-week holiday. Avoiding golf cart hire, according to some of Isla Mujeres luxury rental clients, it makes for a more relaxing holiday.

So why do golf carts cause so many accidents on Isla Mujeres? Partly it is because they are often driven in such an inconsistent manner. Many of those hiring golf carts seem to forget they are driving them on a road with other vehicles, and treat it rather like a game; swerving from side to side and trying to overtake other golf carts and moving into oncoming traffic, alcohol is a factor, something that is very common here is golf carts will suddenly do a U turn, or see something of interest on the other side of the road and  turn without checking their mirrors.
