There appears to be a fairly recent change amongst buyers; much younger couples are planning a move to Isla Mujeres. There have always been those who move to Isla Mujeres with retirement in mind, but now we are seeing inquires from much younger potential buyers who are looking to move permanently to the island; professional people with young children. Not an enormous number, but the shift is such that it can’t be ignored.

 In general, when considering a move to a completely new country like Mexico or indeed any country, probably the sensible thing would be to rent an isla Mujeres home first and buy later. However, if there are small children involved, they probably want to get them settled, and apart from that, trying to rent a quality Isla Mujeres property, over the long term is really difficult; virtually everything is let through one of the platforms such as VRBO or Airbnb, for vacation rentals.

So what is behind this change? It appears to be directly related to what is going on in the world and the uncertainty that seems to surround every aspect of life. Things like concern about war, ever-increasing centralization, controls over our freedom and digital currency. Regarding freedoms, digital currencies, digital ID and facial recognition are the main tools used by governments to exert more control. In Mexico, however, a country where only 55% of adults have a bank account, these controls are going to be much more difficult to implement.

Furthermore, it is a country that has a healthy disrespect for government and authority in general. Cash is still very much in circulation, our Isla Mujeres luxury home rentals are all paid for by credit card or by one of the platforms such as VRBO or Airbnb, but in general in Mexico cash is very much the preferred choice; many establishments have a sign saying Cash Only, and indeed why not,? It is, after all, legal tender.

There has been recent discussion about implementing fifteen-minute cities; this is where you are required  to do everything within fifteen minutes of where you live. If you stray outside that zone, your electric car will be switched off and your digital bank account will stop working. Fifteen minutes will be just fine for Isla Mujeres, because if you were to go more than fifteen minutes in any direction you will end up in the sea. In any event, it is unlikely that future authorities will be particularly interested in Isla Mujeres, which suits us just fine.
