What can I grow in my Isla Mujeres garden.

As to what you can grow in your Isla Mujeres Garden is going to determined to a large extent as to what side of the island the property is located. The Caribbean side certainly has it's advantages; during hot weather there is a pleasant breeze which cools everything down and also keeps the mosquitos away. other times of the year it can become gale force winds and in the worse case scenario a hurricane. Should there be a hurricane it is the Caribbean side of Isla Mujeres that bears the brunt of the storm. The other downsides of that side of the island, is the wind and the salt means that at times the windows need to be cleaned daily and it takes it's toll on plants; many properties on this side of the island have very little in the way of plants.

Clearly having only cactus in your garden is not the most attractive option, although they are so hardy will stand up to almost any weather conditions. The real challenge on the Caribbean side of Isla Mujeres is finding plants that will stand up to wind and salt spray, but they do exist; there is Beach Rose (Rosa Rugoso), Sea Thrift (Ameria Martina) and Buffalo Grass (Boutilier Dactyloid). They will brighten up the garden and are low maintenance.

The other side of the island overlooks the bay to Cancun and is well protected in stormy weather, so a wide range of plants will survive. This side of the island is where we have our Isla Mujeres rental homes. Guest like the lush landscaped gardens, but maintaining the gardens in top condition is not easy. We have learnt over the years to opt for attractive but low maintenance plants, The mistake we made initially was to have a lot of grassed areas, but keeping the grass in top condition and the constant watering, proved very time consuming and gradually we have changed to graveled areas. Gravel still require maintenance but it is minimal. We plant a lot of Bougainvillea which is sturdy but has beautiful flowers all year round.
