Why do they do this?

There was a headline in the press recently which read, Multi Million Robbery, Police Chase and Shoot Out on Isla Mujeres. This was accompanied by a picture of a police car with bullet holes in the side. Without any mention of where this really took place, because it certainly wasn’t Isla Mujeres.

This is disingenuous reporting, often carried out by those with a interest in promoting other areas in the region. This robbery was carried out in what is known as the Zona Continental, which adjoins Cancun on the mainland, it is Isla Mujeres only in name, to all intents and purposes it is Cancun, and no more secure than Cancun.

We have Isla Mujeres rental villas and our guest choose the island because it’s completely secure and of course they are unaware that there is another region named Isla Mujeres, so if they see these reports, they naturally assume it is the island, and robberies and shoot outs are not why they choose to rent an Isla Mujeres home.

There was  a report of thieves arriving at Isla Mujeres beaches on jet skis and robbing the tourists of their valuables. Quite scary, or it would be if it really was Isla Mujeres, but of course it wasn’t, it was once again Isla Mujeres on the mainland.

When a would be tourists wants to check the safety of the island, all they can do is check  the security of the state Quintana Roo, which is not at all the same, there are areas within the state of Quintana Roo that are extremely insecure, someone could get quite the wrong impression thinking that Quintana Roo's safety is the same as Isla Mujeres security.
