Is Isla Mujeres one of the safest places in the world, or not?

Well you wouldn't think so by the way some people behave. When we sell a home to someone from the States, the first thing they do is change the locks and put in more cameras, and other security measures. We have cameras in our Isla Mujeres rental homes, mainly because it makes the guests feel more secure. Guests come to Isla Mujeres from different parts of the States and in some regions security is a concern. It then becomes difficult to adjust to living somewhere where everyone gets on with their life, and leaves you in peace.
We have had Isla Mujeres rental properties for over twenty-three years without a single break-in. It just doesn't happen here. We also don't know of someone else suffering a burglary. Where else can you say that, apart from perhaps one of those countries where they chop your hands off if you are caught stealing. All the locals have work here, and they all know each other. Visitors who come here are looking for a peaceful time and to relax. It isn't really a party place.
Any theft here on the island tends to be opportunistic; those who rent isla Mujeres property can sometimes be a bit careless with their property. If an isla Mujeres rental home is in the Gloria, where some homes open onto the street, and they leave their laptop next to an open window, someone might decide to update their laptop, in most cases it would be just fine; there is a lot of respect here.
People here are also compassionate. During Christmas, there were posts on Facebook by people who were in difficult financial situations asking for help. There was a post by a single mother asking if anyone had a Christmas tree they didn't want, so her small daughter could have one for Christmas, as she was not in a position to buy one. There was an immediate response from people offering Christmas trees both new and nearly new, and also people asking for her address so they could bring round a present for her little girl.
In many places around the world, that sense of compassion and consideration for one's fellow man has been lost. Replaced by material goods and designer clothes. Anyone who has spent some time on Isla Mujeres, will know that designer clothes are not a thing here, far from it.
